We are an imaging academy developed through the support of the regional expertise and knowledge gained from the Northern Radiology Academy (NRAD) to expand training and supervision capacity for the diverse multi-professional workforce in imaging using more efficient and cost effective methods while innovating training through embracing technology to enhance learning and training models and ensuring equity in the in the provision of training within the region.

The need to innovate in training by adopting simulation in radiology was identified in 2011 which led to secure funding and creation of the first regional simulation suite in 2014 in the education centre within Prospect house with the support of County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust which allowed the expansion of radiology post graduate doctors in training within the region and improve the FRCR exam pass rates. With that success and the published report by Health Education England for Radiology Academies in 2017, there was further expansion in the simulation suite infrastructure to include an additional site which was hosted in the Royal Victoria Infirmary Sir James Spence building with the support of the Newcastle Upon Tyne NHS Foundation Trust and further expanding the capacity of the first site in Durham. All this led to the establishment of NRAD in the same year which led to subsequent expansion of the capacity of the radiology post graduate doctors in training, maintain the excellent FRCR exam pass rate and post graduate doctors in the region, that naturally led to increasing radiologist workforce and trainer workforce in the region particularly the areas in need within radiology.

With the success of NRAD, after the Richards Review published in 2021 and the creation of the NENC imaging Network, we identify need to expand the NRAD to incorporate the multi-professional workforce training to be inclusive of Radiologists, Radiographers (including reporting and enhanced), Sonographers, Medical Physicist, Radiology Nurses, Imaging Support Workers, Assistant Practitioners and Mammographers. With the support of the North-East/Yorkshire Regional Imaging and Diagnostics (RID) Academy, NENC Imaging Academy was founded in 2022 with the aim of expanding the roles of NRAD and adapting its training and educational models to suite the needs of the NENC Imaging Network, Region’s Trusts and support the training and expansion of the multi-professional workforce.
